Crabbing in Humboldt Bay and Eureka

Humboldt Bay has documented public shore access, jetties and multiple launches managed by the Harbor District. Dungeness opportunity is seasonal; rock crab rules and marine closures differ.

Del Norte Street Pier

Access: public walk-on pier in Eureka. A straightforward shore option when open; check Harbor District notices before traveling.

Buhne Point and King Salmon

Access: south-bay shoreline/launch area. Treat exposed margins and tidal mud with care.

Mad River Slough mouth

Access: a less-obvious bay area documented by the Harbor District. Confirm legal shoreline access at the exact point you intend to use.

Boat launches

Fields Landing, Samoa, Eureka Public Marina and Woodley Island give boaters several starting points. Keep pots out of marked channels and commercial traffic routes.

Jetties are not casual pier access

The north and south jetties are documented fishing areas, but changing swell, slippery rock and sneaker waves make them substantially more hazardous than a municipal pier. Do not recommend them as a family substitute for Del Norte Street Pier.

Check the California in-season rules

Before keeping Dungeness, confirm the recreational season, any trap restriction related to whale-entanglement risk, domoic-acid health notices and local marine protected areas. A California public-pier license exemption does not automatically apply to every marina dock.
