Crabbing in Siletz Bay, Oregon

Siletz Bay supports Dungeness crab and can offer a smaller-estuary alternative to Yaquina or Tillamook. Freshwater and shallow channels make timing more important than simply seeking the deepest water.

Public access

Use ODFW’s shellfish maps and the Port of Alsea/Siletz-area facility information to identify legal launches and shore access. Do not set equipment in eelgrass, submerged vegetation or navigation channels.

When to try

Smaller Oregon estuaries often improve from late summer into early winter when freshwater influence is lower. Recent heavy rain can reduce salinity and move crab toward the lower bay. Tend gear near manageable tidal exchange.

Bait

ODFW recommends fresh bait. Secure fish or poultry so seals cannot easily remove it; avoid rotting meat and scent oils.
