Outer Banks blue crabbing happens on the protected sound side—not in Atlantic surf. Use public waterfront access and confirm whether a dock allows crabbing rather than relying on a vacation-rental or private marina list.
Northern sound access
Currituck County parks and public waterfront facilities provide starting points around Currituck and Albemarle sounds. Duck, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head publish soundside access information, but each facility’s allowed activities differ.
Roanoke and Pamlico sounds
Manteo and Roanoke Island provide additional public waterfront options. Verify each dock’s parking, hours and crabbing permission with its managing agency before traveling.

Check current size and bag limits, seasonal no-possession windows, female/sponge-crab provisions and whether your pot use requires a Recreational Commercial Gear License.
