Crabbing in Crisfield, Janes Island and Tangier Sound

Janes Island State Park provides the clearest verified crabbing access near Crisfield. Handlines are explicitly allowed along the Daugherty Creek Canal bulkhead, while the marina and soft launch open routes into protected marsh creeks and Tangier Sound.

Daugherty Creek bulkhead

Address: Janes Island State Park, 26280 Alfred J. Lawson Drive, Crisfield. Maryland DNR expressly allows handline crabbing along the canal bulkhead. It is the easiest verified walk-on choice in this guide.

Day use is sunrise to sunset with no day-use entrance fee. The park’s marina, docks, fish-cleaning station, store/nature center and restrooms include accessible facilities.

Janes Island marina and soft launch

Access: the motorboat ramp costs $7 for Maryland residents and $9 for nonresidents; the canoe/kayak soft launch is free. Seven marked water trails begin here. Seasonal paddle-craft rentals generally operate May through October when weather and staffing permit.

Use extra care at low tide: the ramp has a sharp drop-off and interior marsh routes can become extremely shallow.

Crisfield City Dock

Location: the Depot/City Dock area at the end of West Main Street. Maryland lists this as a designated license-free fishing area. It is a possible town-side handline stop, but the official listing does not grant blanket crabbing permission. Read city signs and keep working-waterfront lanes clear.

Tangier Sound

Tangier Sound is boat water, not a shore-access point. The Janes Island ramp connects to Crisfield Harbor, the sound and the Big and Little Annemessex rivers. Match the route to boat size and forecast; the park’s exposed 12.5-mile blue paddle route is for experienced paddlers.

Rules for the lower Chesapeake

Maryland’s Chesapeake recreational season runs April 1 through December 15. Handlines and dip nets are license-exempt within the unlicensed catch limits; collapsible traps and net rings generally require a crabbing license for users age 16 and older. Current male hard-crab size is 5 inches through July 14 and 5¼ inches afterward. Recreational crabbers may not retain female hard or peeler crabs or sponge crabs.

Licensed boat limits differ from unlicensed shore limits. The current July 2026–June 2027 vessel notice caps a licensed recreational boat at one bushel or six dozen male hard crabs. Check the table for your exact combination of people and gear.

Marsh and open-water safety

  • No swimming is allowed in Daugherty Creek Canal.
  • Wind, tide and shallow mud can turn a short paddle into a long return.
  • Do not land on unmarked marsh or private docks.
  • Bring navigation, lighting and life jackets appropriate for open Tangier Sound.
