Crabbing in Cape Charles and Kiptopeke, Virginia

Kiptopeke State Park’s South Beach is the strongest source-verified crabbing access near Cape Charles. The park also has a lighted pier and launch, while Cape Charles Harbor and Wise Point serve boaters. Read the location distinctions carefully: Kiptopeke’s North Beach prohibits crabbing.

Kiptopeke South Beach

Address: 3540 Kiptopeke Drive, Cape Charles. The park explicitly permits crabbing, fishing and boating at South Beach. Use the south beach or designated kayak launch for paddle craft, not the swim beach or boat ramp.

The park is generally open 6 a.m.–10 p.m. and has accessible restrooms, showers, picnic areas, a camp store and a fish-cleaning station. The current 2026 passenger-vehicle parking fee is $7.

Kiptopeke pier and launch

The lighted fishing pier currently has 24-hour access, but winter status can change. Pier admission is $3 for ages 6–12 and $5 for ages 13 and older. The four-lane launch has about 4½ feet at mean low water and space for roughly 70 trailers; launch charges are separate from parking.

Follow the park’s saltwater-license and Virginia FIP instructions. Overnight pier users must actively fish and may not sleep or cook on the pier or lot.

Cape Charles Fun Pier

The free, lighted municipal pier sits at the south end of the public beach near the harbor entrance. It has benches, shade and nearby public restrooms, but current official pages describe fishing rather than explicit crabbing permission. Check town alerts and posted rules before using a handline; a 2026 town report identified boards needing repair.

Cape Charles Harbor and Wise Point

Cape Charles Harbor: public ramp at 11 Marina Road with parking, docks, restrooms, showers, fuel and pumpout. Marina docks are not automatically open for crabbing—ask the harbor master.

Wise Point: the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge ramp is open 5 a.m.–10 p.m., with twin ramps, courtesy pier, restrooms and paid parking. It is a boat-launch alternative, not a public crabbing dock. Refuge islands are closed to landing.

Virginia recreational crab rules

Handlines and collapsible traps may be used year-round. Up to two commercial-style pots may be used from March 17 through November 30 without a separate crabbing license for personal use. Current limits include one bushel of hard crabs plus two dozen peelers per person or vessel, a 5-inch minimum for male and immature female hard crabs, and seasonal peeler-size and sponge-crab restrictions. Site-specific saltwater license and FIP requirements still apply.

Know the no-crabbing areas

Kiptopeke’s North Beach is a swimming beach where fishing, crabbing and watercraft are prohibited. Keep gear out of the Cape Charles deep-water channel and marina entrance. Chesapeake wind and tide can produce rough water quickly, and summer parking may fill.
