Sandy Point State Park is the most clearly documented public crabbing access near Annapolis. Maryland DNR permits shoreline fishing in designated areas and provides a fishing/crabbing pier next to the boat-launch ramps, plus several rock jetties.
Fishing and crabbing pier
Access: walk-on pier beside the launch ramps. This is the simplest choice for handlines, dip nets and permitted collapsible gear. The marina store carries bait and fishing supplies.
Rock jetties and designated shoreline
Access: shore-based options within the park. Use only designated areas and keep clear of swimmers, ramps and vessel traffic.
Night access
The park allows night fishing, but after normal closing only people actively fishing—including children with the group—may remain. Verify gate and park-status information before relying on night access.
Licenses and recreational limits
Maryland requirements depend on the gear and catch quantity. A handline or dip net may be license-exempt in some circumstances, while other gear generally requires licensing or registration. The park separately states that people age 16 and older need a Chesapeake Bay sport fishing license for fishing. Consult the current recreational crabbing table for the rule that matches your exact method.
Trip-planning notes
- Arrive early on summer weekends; Sandy Point is a major day-use destination.
- Bring a measuring gauge and identify sex before retaining a crab.
- Do not set gear in launch lanes or navigation channels.
- Check weather on the open Chesapeake; wind can make an exposed pier uncomfortable even when inland conditions are calm.
